A good setup makes your first day easier. Start with the details that affect your sales and stock, then bring in your products and prepare your team. You do not need to organise your entire business in one sitting.

01. Check your business details

Review the business information in your account before adding products. Use the name your customers recognise, and check the location details you want associated with your business.

Pay particular attention to your currency and time zone wherever those settings are available. Your product prices and daily records should make sense for where you trade. If you have more than one location, decide which one you are preparing first so you do not mix up stock or opening information.

  • Business name and contact details
  • The location you are setting up
  • Trading currency and time zone

02. Prepare a useful starting product list

Gather the information you already have. A spreadsheet, supplier document, or stock list can give you a starting point. Include clear product names, selling prices, quantities, and existing product codes when you have them.

Keep sizes and pack quantities clear. “Pepsi 330 ml” tells you more than “Pepsi,” and a single item is different from a case. If you are starting with only your most popular products, make that choice deliberately and add the rest as you go.

03. Give your team the access they need

Decide who will use Tillmate and what each person needs to do. Someone serving customers may need different access from the person managing stock or reviewing the business.

Use individual staff access where available instead of sharing the owner's sign-in. Review the permissions you assign, especially those that allow changes to products or inventory. Product imports through Tilly require the Manage inventory permission.

04. Check the basics before your first day

Open a few products after you add them and check their names, prices, and quantities. Make sure the person handling checkout can find the items they will sell.

Walk through your normal customer interaction without completing a pretend sale in your live records. Decide how you will take payment, provide a receipt, and handle questions at the till. A short preparation check now can save repeated interruptions later.
