Open and close your register with confidence

A clear register routine helps the next cashier start well and makes differences easier to explain. Count what is actually in the drawer, record movements as they happen and check the shift before you close it.

01. Start with a counted float

Choose Open POS and check the location and cashier. If a register needs opening, count the money already in the drawer. Enter that amount as the opening float, then choose Open Register. The float is money available for change; it is not a sale.

For example, if you start with J$5,000 in notes and coins, enter J$5,000 even if yesterday's drawer started with a different amount.

02. Record cash that is not a sale

Use the register's Cash In or Cash Out controls for money added or removed outside a sale. Follow your business's approval routine and record a clear reason. Cash taken out for a small expense should not look like a missing customer payment.

Use See Cash Register Details to check the register information. An X Report lets you review the shift before closing.

03. Count before closing

At the end of the shift, count the physical notes and coins. Choose Close Register and enter the counted amount when prompted. Compare it with the expected amount. Check the opening float, cash movements, refunds and payment methods if the figures differ.

Record the difference honestly. Do not change the count simply to make it match. Follow your manager's process for reviewing a variance and keep the closing Z Report with your shift records.

04. Use the same handover every time

A consistent handover is more useful than a rushed end-of-day correction.

• Check the correct location and cashier.
• Count and enter the opening float.
• Record cash movements during the shift.
• Count the drawer, review differences and close the register.
